Participation Success in the Mojácar Domino Tournament

The Mojácar Dominos Championship, returning to the municipality after a long hiatus, coincided with the Saint Augustine festivities.

Organized by Mojácar Council through the Festivities Department, the championship saw high participation, with 28 male players and eight female players competing for victory in their respective tournaments.

For the first time, women were invited to participate in a combined championship, and their response was enthusiastic. Adorned with Mojácar scarves around their necks, the female players demonstrated a high level of play and eagerness to compete.

Throughout the matches, a lively atmosphere prevailed, with many players reuniting after a prolonged absence. This reunion led to numerous anecdotes, memories, and conversations, highlighting the camaraderie among participants.

Given the extended hiatus since the championship’s last edition, the call for participation was well-received, prompting requests for its repetition in the near future.

After intense competition showcasing the participants’ skill, the winners in the women’s category were Beatriz Gómez and Isabel Colmenero. In the men’s category, the finalists José María Montoya, Javier Montoya, Juan Montoya, and Francisco Flores engaged in a hard-fought final, with the latter two emerging victorious.

Both male and female winners received a delectable prize comprising hams, pork shoulders, and wine, allowing them to celebrate their victories with friends and family.

The Mojácar Third Age Centre serves as a popular gathering place for domino enthusiasts, although games such as “garrafina” and “subastao” are also enjoyed by attendees.

Dominoes, one of the most renowned board games globally, originated over 1,000 years ago in China, possibly as a derivative of dice games. Despite its French name, it was the Italians who introduced it to Europe in the mid-18th century, shaping its modern form with 28 double, rectangular dominoes.
