Mojácar Home Candidate for the European Union Contemporary Architecture Prize

A home in Mojácar has been nominated as a candidate for the European Union Contemporary Architecture Award, EUmies Awards 2024, selected from among 362 outstanding works from 38 different European countries. Among these notable works, 29 are situated across Spain, with one located in Mojácar.

This home received the ARCO award in May 2023 from the Almería Official College of Architects. Designed by architect Alberto Campo Baeza in collaboration with Modesto Sánchez Morales, an Almería-based architectural firm, the house is situated in Mojácar village with an east-west orientation. It complies with all existing regulations, spans two stories, and boasts breathtaking views of the sea, making the most of the locality’s terraced terrain. The interior is characterized by abundant natural light, skillfully harnessed to accentuate the luminosity synonymous with Mojácar, suffusing every room.

Four years of diligent effort have culminated in this well-deserved recognition, paying homage to the architectural spirit embodied by Roberto Puig: white volumes facing the sea. Alberto Campo Baeza has served as a professor of projects at the Madrid School of Architecture, ETSAM, for over 30 years. He has delivered lectures worldwide and garnered numerous awards and distinctions, including honorary doctorates from San Pablo CEU University, Lusíada University in Lisbon, and the National University of Rosario in Argentina, among others. He was elected as a full academic member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts Architecture Section, and in 2022, he was honored with the Madrid College of Architects Gold Insignia.

The EUmies Awards, presented by the European Union and the Mies Van der Rohe Foundation, recognize the best architectural works constructed in Europe between April 2021 and May 2023. These biennial awards aim to celebrate excellence in architectural achievements across Europe, emphasizing the property’s functionality and integration into its territorial context. The awards focus on transforming the built environment in Europe, prioritizing excellence and innovation in architecture to create a more sustainable environment. They also aim to promote environmental, social, and economic awareness through architecture, including landscape architecture, urban planning, and design, in collaboration with other cultural and social domains.

The 2024 edition of the EUmies Awards will address the current challenges faced by citizens, architects, developers, and other professionals within the framework of the European Green Deal.
