The Moors and Christians Association Sets New Date for the 2024 Festivities

The Almosaquer Moors and Christians Association has announced the official dates for the celebration of the 2004 Moors and Christians Festival, which will take place on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of June.

The decision to set these dates was made during a meeting of the Association’s board, primarily due to the European Parliament elections scheduled for the 9th of June 2024. The overlap with the traditional dates of the Mojácar Moors and Christians festivities would have complicated the normal staging of the activities planned by the Association for each edition of the festival, which is fervently enjoyed in Mojácar.

In 2024, the Mojácar Moors and Christians festival will mark its 36th year since its inception in 1988. Over the years, the festival has experienced continuous growth and has become increasingly prominent in the municipality. Mojácar currently boasts four Moorish “kábilas” and three Christian camps, with participation from the entire town, including multiple generations of families who partake in the numerous events scheduled throughout the three days of celebration.

The Almosaquer Association’s work continues year-round. Regular meetings are held every two weeks, bringing together the presidents of each kábila and barracks to plan new features or improvements for the upcoming season. Additionally, preparations are underway for the next edition of the Moors and Christians magazine, scheduled for release every April. The magazine provides a comprehensive overview of the previous edition and offers a preview of the upcoming festivities.

Another upcoming event is the contest for Moorish and Christian bands, aimed at enriching the festivities with a specific musical program. The contest offers prizes of 1,000 euros and 500 euros for the top two bands, generously donated by the Association and Mojácar Council.

Furthermore, the permanent exhibition titled “Encounters,” located in the Arab water storage facilities of the Mojácar castle, chronicles the history of the festival from its inception. The exhibition showcases clothing, posters, and primarily photographs, illustrating the growth of the celebration and highlighting its key figures.
