Masterclass in the Municipal Music School Given by María Torres Melgares, One of the Best International Saxophonists of the Moment

The Mojácar Municipal Music School, under the auspices of the Council’s Culture Department, recently organized a significant masterclass featuring saxophone virtuoso María Torres Melgares, one of Spain’s foremost performers on this instrument.

Maria Torres Melgares has spent three years living in the United States, where she is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts in saxophone performance at the University of Iowa. Prior to this, she completed her Music Masters in saxophone performance at the University of Michigan, along with two certificates in Entrepreneurship in Arts and Leadership.

Although born in Tarrasa, her family hails from Almería. She earned her advanced studies from the Liceu Superior Conservatory, consistently receiving scholarships based on her merits from the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation.

Despite her young age of 25, she boasts an extensive résumé of national and international accolades, recognitions, and awards, which she has accumulated through hard work and exceptional talent. Her musical journey began at the age of nine when she decided to dedicate herself to the saxophone, inspired by her grandfather who also played the instrument.

The masterclass provided a unique opportunity for the students of the school and the Mojácar municipality, allowing them to learn from a true professional of internationally recognized prestige, particularly in the US, where reaching the level of María Torres is a significant achievement, positioning her among the most prominent international saxophonists.

During the masterclass, María Torres Melgares presented strategies for optimizing saxophone practice and time management to the students of the Music School and the municipal band. She also engaged in practical exercises, working on different melodies with the students, offering individualized advice to enhance their performance skills and maximize their musical potential.

Furthermore, María Torres Melgares participated in the Mojácar Municipal Music Band concert of soloists on July 27th at the Multi-Uses Centre in the locality, conducted by its director, Miguel Ángel Miranda.
