The Territorial Delegate for Tourism, Culture and Sport in Almeria Visits Mojacar on World Tourism Day

The Junta de Andalucía territorial delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport in Almería, José Ángel Vélez González, made a significant visit to Mojácar to join Mayor Francisco García Cerdá and his government team in commemorating World Tourism Day. Their itinerary included a tour of the Mojácar la Vieja excavations, where they engaged with archaeologists leading the fifth campaign to unearth the ancient Mojácar settlement.

Accompanied by key figures like José María Civantos, coordinator of the University of Granada Biocultural Archaeology laboratory (MEMOLab), and CSIC researcher Jorge Rouco, the territorial delegate explored the excavation sites and gained insights into the latest discoveries. Expressing genuine interest, Vélez González underscored the significance of the Mojácar la Vieja dig site as a tourism asset, highlighting its role in reinforcing Mojácar’s status as one of Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages.

Emphasizing the importance of ongoing excavation, research, and documentation, Vélez González emphasized the need to leverage this resource for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. The visit coincided with Mojácar’s recent designation as an Andalucía tourism municipality, further solidifying its position as a key destination.
