Cultural Activities in Mojácar Around the Mojácar La Vieja Archaeological Excavation

The Mojácar Council Culture Department, in collaboration with the University of Granada MEMOLab laboratory, is hosting various activities throughout September related to the fifth excavation campaign of Mojácar la Vieja in 2023.

The first activity, an archaeological ceramics workshop, took place this week in the locality’s senior citizens function hall and will be held again on the 26th in the same venue. Over 30 participants volunteered for this event, working alongside the archaeologists responsible for the excavation to clean and classify the ceramic remains discovered thus far in the 2023 campaign.

Cristina Martínez, the excavation technician, welcomed the participants and explained the significance of the workshop. She emphasized that studying these remains allows us to understand various aspects of ancient Mojácar life, including diet, household size, and daily routines.

A diverse array of ceramics has been unearthed so far, mirroring household items used today: pots, plates, glasses, small jars, and storage containers, among others, shedding light on life during that period.

While excavation work continues throughout September, the archaeologists’ tasks extend beyond the field. They analyze and compare the data and remains in laboratories, conduct consolidation work to protect excavated artifacts from weather damage, and produce reports on their findings. This comprehensive investigation involves various data processing actions that occur year-round.

In addition to the ceramics workshop, other free workshops open to the public are planned for September, including interactive games about Mojácar la Vieja, photography sessions, drawing and painting days, and demonstrations of historical clothes washing techniques at the Mojácar fountain.

Guided tours of the excavation site are scheduled for September 17th and 24th, during which the project director will provide insights into 12th-century Muslim Mojácar and share the latest discoveries and conclusions from the 2023 campaign.

Finally, on September 28th, experts involved in the excavation will showcase the results of the fifth archaeological campaign at the locality’s Public Fountain.
